What are Cookies?

Cookies are files that websites install on the user’s browser or devices (smartphones, tablet) when the user browses the pages of the website. They serve to store information about the user’s visit to the website.

Cookies are used for the following purposes:

  • To ensure the correct functioning of the pages of the website.
  • To store user preferences, such as language or font size.
  • To learn about the user’s browsing experience.
  • To compile anonymous statistical information, such as what pages the user has visited and the amount of time he/she has spent at the website.

The use of Cookies enables us to optimise the browsing experience, adapting the information and services to the interests of the users, in order to provide the user with the best possible experience whenever he/she visits the website.

Cookies can be divided into session cookies and permanent cookies, in keeping with their duration. Session cookies expire when the user closes the browser. Permanent cookies expire when the purpose for which they were created has been achieved or when they are manually deleted.

Moreover, depending on their aim, the Cookies can be categorised as follows:

  • Necessary: These cookies are essential for the correct functioning of the website. They are usually generated when the user accesses or logs into the website and they are used to identify the user at the website, for the following purposes:
    • To keep the user logged in, so that if the user leaves the website or closes the browser or device and returns to the same website at another time, he/she can browse the site more easily without having to log in again.
    • To verify that the user is authorised to access certain services or areas of the website.
  • Performance: These cookies are used to improve the user experience and optimise the website’s performance, such as for example, storing different service settings.
  • Advertising: Cookies that gather information on the advertisements shown to website users. These cookies can be one of two types:
    • Anonymous: They only compile information on the advertising spaces shown on the website, regardless of who accesses the website. In other words, they do not expressly identify the user.
    • Customised: These cookies enable third parties to compile the personal information of the website user, in order to customise the advertisements shown in the advertising spaces.
  • Geolocation: These cookies are used to find out what country or region the user is in when accessing any of the website’s services, in order to offer that person contents or services that are appropriate to his/her location.
  • Analytical: They gather information on the user’s browsing experience at the website, usually anonymously. However, at times these cookies also make it possible to identify the user exceptionally and unequivocally in order to obtain information on the user’s interests in the services offered by the website.
